The most advanced AI has become open. What does that mean for your business?
What happened this week, in simple words
Every few months a new AI model comes out, and every time it's "the next big thing." Usually I raise an eyebrow. This time something happened that's genuinely worth paying attention to.
A company called DeepSeek released a top-tier new AI model this week. That's not the news. The news is that they released it with open source. In simple words: anyone can take the model, run it on their own system, and build on it, without asking permission and without paying per use.
That sounds technical, but the implication is very simple: the best AI in the world is no longer reserved for companies with huge budgets.
Why "open" matters for a small business
When you use AI from a big company, you're dependent on them. Their pricing, their availability, and what happens with your data. When there's a high-quality open model, three new options open up:
- Your data stays with you. You can run the AI inside your business, without sending your customer details to another company's server.
- The price drops. You don't pay per word. After setup, the ongoing cost is much lower.
- No lock-in. You're not stuck with one vendor. If a better vendor comes along tomorrow, you simply switch.
What this gives you in practice
Let's talk in examples, not theory:
- A chatbot that answers customers. Instead of paying per question to a big company, you can run a local model that costs pennies.
- Document processing, lead classification, call summarization. Everything we talked about in the previous post becomes even cheaper.
- And I'm speaking from experience. I run models like these on a graphics card at home, and test what actually works before I offer it to a client.
Now the honest part
An open model isn't magic. It doesn't mean everything becomes free and amazing at the push of a button.
Running AI properly in a business isn't like downloading an app. You need someone who knows how to choose the right model, connect it to the business's systems, make sure the answers are reliable, and handle maintenance. The gap between a pretty demo and a system that works every day still exists, and it's not going away.
But the foundation, the model itself, is no longer the problem. And that's a turning point.
The bottom line
The best AI is no longer reserved for the big players. Prices dropped, capabilities went up, and the door has opened. If you've been waiting for the right moment to bring AI into your business without breaking the bank, that moment has arrived.
